dr. Senior Consultant Gianpaolo Balzano

Dr. Gianpaolo Balzano is a Senior Consultant at the Pancreas Surgery Unit of the San Raffaele Research Hospital in Milan. Currently he is a very high-volume pancreatic surgeon, performing about 100 pancreatic resections per year as the first surgeon or tutor, including minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery.His research activity is mainly focused both on the improvement of survival for patients with pancreatic cancer and to the improvement of surgical techniques, to reduce the impact of pancreatic surgery. He introduced in Italy the technique of pancreatic islets autotransplantation to improve the glycaemic control after extensive pancreatic resections, particularly for patients with chronic pancreatitis or benign neoplasm of the middle pancreas.
