Maurizio Boscaini earned a degree with honours in Medicine and Surgery at the
University of Rome “La Sapienza” where he took a degree with honours in Specialist
in Gastroenterology at the IInd Department of Clinical Medicine and became a
Resident.
The University of Rome sent him to the Department of Experimental Ultrasound at
the Oncologic Centre at the “Paoli-Calmettes” Hospital Marseille (France) directed
by Prof. H. Pietri where he contributed to research. During the same period he also
worked for one year as a Researcher at the “Unité de Recherces de Pathologie
Digestive” (INSERM U31) Marseille directed by Prof. H. Sarles with duties in
experimental ultrasound and pancreatic physiology. In addition, he worked in the
Department of Gastroenterology and in the laboratories of pancreatic biochemistry at
the Sainte-Marguerite Hospital Marseille.
He earned a Specialisation in Ultrasound in Hepato-Gastroenterology at the
University of Marseille where he also held a Course in Ultrasound for seven years.
While in Italy, he remained at IIIrd Surgical Department, University of Rome with
duties as teaching and research assistant. At the same time, he assumed the Direction
of the Gastroenterology Research Department at the I.N.I. Institute Grottaferrata
(Rome) for eight years. He also became Adjunct Professor at the School of
Specialization in Digestive tract Surgery and Digestive Endoscopy at the University
of Rome “Tor Vergata”.
During this period he became interested in the area of extracorporeal lithotripsy of
biliary stones (still in an experimental stage) and visited several times the Centre for
Lithotripsy at the Grosshadern Hospital (Germany) directed by Prof. Paumgartner.
He has been Adjunct Professor in Gastroenterology at the University of Rome “La
Sapienza” for 20 years.
He has been Lecturer in Ultrasound at the School of Basic Ultrasound (SIUMB) for
20 years and Lecturer in Interventional and Intraoperative Ultrasound at the School
of Advanced Ultrasound (SIUMB) for 10 years.
From 1988 until present, he is the Founder and Medical Director of the
Extracorporeal Lithotripsy Unit at the Pio XI Clinic in Rome where biliary,
pancreatic, renal and ureteral stones are being pulverized with shock waves through
an exclusive ultrasound real-time targeting. He has participated as Lecturer and Moderator at 123 National and International
Congresses and is the Author of 107 publications.
He is a Member of The Italian Society of Gastroenterology, The Society of Digestive
Endoscopy, The Italian Association for the Studies of the Liver (AISF), The Italian
Society of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, The European Federation of
Societies of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, The American Gastroenterological
Association. He is a Senior Member of American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine
and Biology
